WHERE DOES ANTI-GAY BIGOTRY COME FROM?

Just read this article linked on Conservative Grapevine. The author opposes gay marriage. Well so do I. I whole-heartedly support civil unions, however. I believe it will be good for GLB people and good for the country in general. But that is where my agreement ends.

He trots out the old, gays-are-disease-ridden-pariahs stuff.
Where does he get this? From so many gay people clinging to their victim hood status to the exclusion of personal responsibility, and to be fair, from the health effects of the low self esteem that can come from growing up hearing "that's gay" as being the worst of insults. It still does not change the fact that many reinforce the stereotype by refusing to take responsibility. STD's are preventable. Drug addiction is preventable. But it does not change the fact that to paint all the same color as the many is stereotyping and bigoted.

He states that "the concept of gay monogamy is fiction." Where does he get that from? From the huge number of people pushing gay marriage not because they want monogamous relationships, but pushing it as a way to piss off their perceived enemies and say, "There! What do you think of that!?" like a five year old. Many are pushing it while simultaneously denying the value of monogamy and celebrating polygamy and open relationships as deserving "official" sanction and recognition. Does this mean there are no GLB people who believe in the value of monogamy and practice it? No, of course not. Painting all the same color as the many is stereotyping and bigoted.

To me what is important is to not dismiss any criticism out of hand and not to demonize the critic as necessarily having nothing of value to say. I have met many people with whom I agree on nearly everything but adamantly disagree on or two issues. For instance, I LOVE reading postings at Moonbattery, an excellent blog that cracks me up. But there are occasionally gay-people-are-evil posts that if find repulsive. Does that make this blogger evil? No, just misinformed and having blind spots, the same as we ALL have blind spots, being imperfect human beings (Well, ok, Der Messiah is perfect, and a lot of self rightous post-modern liberals, but besides them....nobody is perfect). I'm not going to throw away that chance to become more informed on issues I agree with because of a few on which we disagree. Seems kinda stupid to me....

So yes, there are some people that just don't get it. So what? Somebody doesn't like you. Grow a thicker skin and quit cryin. And then before going on about how wrong they are, realize that you can't clean the world if you leave your own house in a mess.
