I am definitely for the repeal of "don't ask don't tell." If a guy that likes guys is willing and able to do the job, he shouldn't have to hide an essential aspect of his identity to do it. The men I've met who serve and have served in the military, that were born with same sex attraction, are hardly less than real men. That's a joke. But Ace makes a good point:
Don't ask, don't tell makes military service less attractive to gays and progressive liberals. But they, largely, are not inclined to serve in any event. Repealing the code makes service less attractive to traditionalists and, yes, conservatives (as well as blacks and Hispanics) who tend to be liberal on many issues but not particularly progressive about homosexuality) who actually are inclined to serve.
As in other places where "gays" can serve openly, people will just get used to it, see their stereotypes blown away and it will be no big deal. But perhaps when we are in the middle of an active war, it's not the time to be doing this. Priorities, ya know?
